Corvette Convertible, 283-270 hp (2 x 4s), 4 speed, with matching numbers, looks, runs, and drives just like it came off the St Louis assembly line on October 24, 1960 (VIN #10867S101958) . This privately owned roman red with white coves exterior, black interior, and white soft top corvette received a NCRS Duntov Mark of Excellence Award (Top Flight and Performance Verification) in 2007. Only 1,482 corvettes to have ever achieved this prestigious award. In preparation, the vehicle underwent a complete body-off restoration to return it to its original new car sales showroom condition (included all elements of operations, interior, exterior, chassis and mechanical). Optioned with FOA 101 Deluxe heater, FOA 102 - Signal seeking radio, RPO 290 - 6.70 x 15 whitewalls, RPO 468 - Dual four-barrel (high performance), RPO 470 White folding top and RPO 685 Four-speed transmission. Seller has owned this corvette since 1986 and has documented title chain back to 1978.
Restoration
The vehicle has undergone a complete frame-off restoration with the objective of returning it to the condition and appearance it had leaving the Corvette production plant in St Louis in October1960. The processes put a premium on a combination of originality and condition down to the last nut and bolt. Everything was replaced, refinished or rebuilt; every nut, wire and fastener was removed and reconditioned or replaced. All original or reproduction factory correct components were utilized. On its last judging, the vehicle earned a NCRS Top Flight with a 98.2%. All certificates, ribbons and judging sheets convey with the vehicle along with a complete list of restoration specialists utilized. Since the restoration, the vehicle has logged 680 miles and has been displayed in a heated carriage house.
Operations
The vehicle has passed (100%) the demanding NCRS Performance Verification (PV) test which determined that it is correctly equipped and able to fully function and perform as designed, intended and expected when brand new. This PV included a 10 mile road test and is documented in the judging sheets that convey with the vehicle.
Interior
All the original instruments, speedometer, tachometer (RPO 468, 6500 rpm red line), clock and Wonderbar radio have been professionally rebuilt and restored. The black interior was completely restored using Al Knock seat covers & springs, door panels, carpeting, sun visors and dash pad. Original seat belts have been restored to like new condition. The seat separator contains a 1961 Owners Guide, Owners Protection Plan and other appropriate new car literature. The trunk contains a new spare, jack, lug wrench and mat and liner.
Exterior
Roman Red and Ermine White cove exterior is polyurethane that has been hand prepped to appear as the original lacquer paint. The windshield and door glass is appropriately dated (UT). The white soft top is a reproduction, missing the embossed trademark & date, it was the largest point deduction (-0.2%) item in the last judging. All rubber, window felt and trim pieces on the car have been replaced or redone and polished. The Goodyear 6.70 x 15 wide whitewall tires are mounted on 15 x 5 steel wheels covered with the original polished stainless steel wheel covers.
Mechanical
Matching WCFB (Will Carter Four Barrel) carburetors (2613S & 2614S) percolate on top of a numbers correct 283 cu in block (casting #519, dated J-13-0, assembly stamp 1017CU, VIN derivative 1958) to net 270 HP at 3400 RPM. The RPO 468 engine has been totally rebuilt including Duntov high performance cam, solid lifters, and duel point distributor. Polished stainless or chrome radio ignition shielding and air cleaner are all in place and looking showroom new.
Chassis
Date correct 30 amp generator has been completely rebuilt along with voltage regulator, horn relay and starter. The entire electrical harness has been replaced with a new reproduction harness along with a maintenance free battery encased in an exact reproduction of the original Delco tar top battery. The brake lines have been restored with stainless steel lines and system uses DOT 5 brake fluid. The cooling system is one of the few 1961s with an unpainted aluminum (new reproduction) Harrison radiator. The original windshield washer system has been totally rebuilt and runs great. The underside of the car is as nice as the top. The entire frame has been sand blasted and painted with chassis black epoxy, all new bushings, rebound straps, shocks and springs (the rebuilt original rear leaf springs are currently on the vehicle and an additional reproduction set conveys). The original four-speed Warner T-10 transmission has been completely rebuilt and connected to the 3.70 rear end. Finally RPO 469 is completed with crossover pipe and dual off road exhausts.
